SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State University women's tennis team opens action on Friday, January 31, hosting an exhibition match against Tyler Junior College at 2 p.m. The Rambelles will then head to Plano, Texas, to begin the regular season and compete against Harding University at 10 a.m. and Collin County at 3 p.m. on Sunday, February 2.
The Belles had a successful fall season with
Valentina Gonzalez and
Ena Ovcina competing in the International Tennis Association Oracle Cup, advancing all the way to the semifinals before falling in two straight sets to Nova Southeastern.
Following the fall season, Angelo State had five players enter the ITA rankings between singles and doubles. Nationally, Gonzalez and Ovcina picked up the No. 4 spot in doubles out of 25 teams and Gonzalez claimed the No. 25 spot in singles.
Regionally, the duo entered the in the No. 2 spot with teammates Zoe Gubbles and
Maria Delgadillo taking the No. 3 spot. In singles, Gonzalez took the No. 5 spot followed by Rodriguez No. 8 and Ovcina No. 12.
As a team, the Belles rank 12
th nationally and first in the South Central Region. ASU claimed this feat within two years of the program being reinstated.
"We are looking forward to competing against great competition this weekend. The girls have put in some great work and we are excited to start the journey," said head coach
Chris Bizot.
Following the weekend, the Belles travel to Georgetown, Texas, to compete in another exhibition match against Southwestern University on Saturday, February 8 at 3 p.m.
