DALLAS, Texas – The Angelo State men's basketball team came up against a hot-shooting Dallas Baptist squad on Friday night, falling 101-75 on the road to open the Lone Star Conference season at the Burg Center.
The Rams (0-1, 0-1 LSC) fell behind early after a 10-point run by DBU (1-0, 1-0 LSC) gave the Patriots a 17-8 lead just under five minutes into play. DBU kept up the pressure, shooting 60.5 percent in the first half.
Making his debut for the Rams,
Sam Baker led ASU in scoring with 20 points on the night, shooting 8-of-17 with three three-pointers to go along with three rebounds and three assists. Also playing his first game in the Blue and Gold was
Devaughn Thomas who shot 5-of-8 for 12 points and added four rebounds.
DBU finished the first half on an eight-point run, taking a 58-37 lead into the halftime break. Chandler Jacobs led the Patriots with 25 points and 10 rebounds while Ricky Lujan added 19 points and Jalen White finished the night with 15 points.
The Rams kept things closer in the second period but couldn't overcome the first-half deficit.
Kevon Godwin added eight points on the night for ASU, going perfect from the free-throw line while
Paul Williams totaled seven points along with three rebounds and three assists.
Angelo State will have another chance at the Patriots on Saturday afternoon as they take on DBU in game two of this weekend's doubleheader, tipoff is set for 1 p.m. at the Burg Center.
