Rams Defeat TAMIU on Senior Night

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State University men's basketball team defeated the Texas A&M International University Dustdevils, 79-69, on Saturday afternoon on Senior Day. Andres Ibarguen was monstrous, recording his 11th double-double on the season.

The Rams improve to 18-6 overall and 14-6 in conference action.

In Case You Missed It:
  • Both teams battled in the first half as neither team was able to grab an edge over the other.
  • At the 11:59 mark, Ibarguen knocked down to free throws to put the lead in favor of the Rams at 13-12.
  • From there, Collin Turner went on a 5-0 scoring run to increase the Blue and Gold lead to 18-12.
  • The Dustdevils grabbed the lead back at 20-18 with 7:39 remaining.
  • Angelo State came back and tied the game three more times before taking the lead back at the 3:49 mark, 25-24, but TAMIU took the lead back once more. Marcel Pettway scored a shot under the basket to give the lead back to ASU, as it held on to take a 34-28 lead at halftime.
  • The Rams came out on fire in the second half, starting off on a 10-0 run to lead 44-18 but the Dustdevils ended the run at the 16:36 mark.
  • ASU scored five more points to increase its lead to 49-30 at the 15:55 mark.
  • The Rams had a 21-point lead over TAMIU twice but the Dustdevils would slowly close in on the lead as they trailed 65-62 at the 4:07 mark, as they went on a 12-0 run over the span of three minutes.
  • From there, Angelo State battled going on a 14-5 scoring run in the final 3:40 to claim the 79-69 victory.
Coach Boone's Comments:
"We are so proud of our four seniors and everything that they've done for our program. Pretty neat that three of the four seniors had double-doubles tonight and the fourth senior led us in scoring with 22 points. Always a great thing to win on senior night. Now we look forward to our last few regular season games and hope we can keep our winning streak going."

Key Players:
  • Ibarguen finished the night with 17 points and 14 rebounds, 10 of them coming offensively.
  • Marcel Pettway tallied a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbed 12 boards, nine of them defensively.
  • Camron Reedus contributed to the offense and defense, registering 11 rebounds and scoring 12 points.
  • Turner led the Rams offense with 22 points. He went 7-of-17 from the floor, 4-for-11 from the three-point line, and a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe.
Up Next:
The Rams will close out the regular season on the road, as they head to Silver City, New Mexico, and Odessa, Texas, to take one Western New Mexico and the University of Texas Permian Basin on Thursday, February 27 and Saturday, February 29, respectively. Tip off is slated for 7:30 p.m. Central Standard time on Thursday and 4 p.m. on Saturday.
