Rams Split the Day with WTAMU

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The No. 1 Angelo State University baseball team split the day with the No. 14 West Texas A&M Buffs on Saturday. The Rams claimed the game one victory in walk off fashion but fell in game two, 8-2, for their first loss of the season.

The Rams fall to 16-1 overall and in conference play.

Game 1: ASU 8, WTAMU 5
  • The Buffs got off to a quick 1-0 lead over the Rams with the help of a double to right center field by Clay Koelzer to score Cade Engle.
  • The Blue and Gold answered in the bottom of the second off a steal to home plate by Justin Lee. Lee started with a walk and stole second to place himself in scoring position. A ground out by Nick Novak advanced Lee to third and Tyler Mendoza helped Lee steal home on a distraction play to tie the game 1-1.
  • West Texas A&M's Keone Givens hit a leadoff single down the right field line and Engle followed up with a two run homer to increase the Buffs lead to 3-1.
  • The Rams cut in on the lead in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, Josh Elvir was walked. Bradley Mathiowetz stepped into the batter's box and hit a single through the left side and advanced to second which allowed Elvir to score on an error by the Buffs to trail 3-2.
  • WTAMU managed to score one more run in the top of the sixth to lead ASU, 5-2.
  • Angelo State kept themselves alive, scoring three runs in the sixth to tie the game at 5-5. Aaron Walters hit a one out single to left field to start the run parade. Nick Seginowich doubled to left center field to advance Walters to third. Bases were loaded on a walk by Lee forcing the Buffs to make a pitching change. Riley Peterson kept the bases juiced and Walters was scored on the walk. Seginowich and Lee rounded out the scoring runs.
  • Heading to the bottom of the seventh inning, Parker Bramlett led off with a single to right center field and stole second to land in scoring position. Trying to set up a double play, the Buffs intentionally walked Mathiowetz. With two outs, Seginowich claimed the victory for ASU with a walk off home run to left field to score Bramlett and Mathiowetz for the 8-5 win.
Game 2: WTAMU 8, ASU 2
  • After two scoreless innings, the Buffs took the 1-0 lead off a single to right field by Kyle Moos to score Izaiah Madrid.
  • West Texas A&M continued to increase the lead at the top of the fifth scoring six runs to take a 7-0 lead over ASU.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, ASU answered back and ended the Buffs' shut out. Mathiowetz notched a single to right field to send Bramlett home and trail 7-1. Seginowich continued his hitting streak with a single to right center to score Mathiowetz as the Rams trailed 7-2.
  • WTAMU managed to score one more run in the seventh to hand ASU its first loss of the season.
Coach Brooks' Comments:
"Really proud of how we fought back in game one of the double header. Thought Ben Elder did a great job limiting damage and Kyle Moseley came in and was lights out. Offensively, we had a lot of big contributions with Seginowich getting the walk off. Game two Dean did a good job of slowing us down offensively and unfortunately, we did something we haven't done all year which was give up the big inning. That proved to be the difference. Still have a chance to win the series tomorrow and expect us to come out ready to go."

Key Players:
  • Seginowich led the offense with four RBI, two runs, three hits.
  • Mathiowetz went 3-for-7 from the plate, scoring one run and recorded one RBI.
  • Lee scored two runs while four other players scored one.
