AUSTIN, Texas – The No. 1 Angelo State University baseball team fell short in game one of the series against St. Edward's University on Friday afternoon, 3-2.
The Rams fall to 17-2 on the season and in conference action.
In Case You Missed It:
- After two scoreless innings, the Hilltoppers took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning.
- St. Edward's increased the lead in the bottom of the fifth, after a fielder's choice allowed the Hilltoppers to cross the plate and take a 3-0 lead.
- The Rams came back and ended the shutout in the bottom of the sixth inning to trail by one at 3-2. After Parker Bramlett was walked, Bradley Mathiowetz advanced Bramlett to second with a single hit to left field. Both runners were able to advance on a wild pitch to place themselves in scoring position. Nick Seginowich stepped up to the plate and scored Bramlett for ASU's first run of the game with a single to shortstop. Mathiowetz followed with the next run and scored off an error by the Hilltoppers.
- However, the SEU pitching was too much for ASU to overcome, falling 3-2 in game one of the series.
Coach Brooks' Comments:
"We knew St. Ed's was a very quality ball club coming in to today and they showed that. Their pitchers did a great job throwing strikes and controlled our running game. They did a great job getting their lead off guy on and then playing good baseball. Sometimes the other guy is better and today they were better than us. We will be ready to go tomorrow and try and even up the series."
Key Players:
- Mathiowetz and Seginowich led the Ram offense, going 2-for-4 from the batter's box. Seginowich tallied one RBI and Mathiowetz scored one run for ASU.
- Three other players contributed to the Blue and Gold offense with one hit each.
- On the mound, Trent Baker struck out six batters in seven innings of work.
