AUSTIN, Texas – The No. 1 Angelo State University baseball team split the series against St. Edward's University, falling in the series finale, 7-3, on Sunday afternoon.
The Rams fall to 19-3 overall and in conference action.
In Case You Missed It:
- The Hilltoppers took an early 2-0 lead over the Rams in the bottom of the first inning.
- After three scoreless innings, the Rams ended St. Edward's shutout and trailed 2-1. Bradley Mathiowetz hit a leadoff double to right center field to grab the first hit of the game for ASU. Nick Seginowich followed behind with a single to place runners on the corners. Aaron Walters ended up grounding into a double play but it still allowed for Mathiowetz to score.
- In the bottom half of the fourth inning, the Hilltoppers increased their lead over the Rams, plating two more runs to lead 4-1.
- In the fifth inning, the Rams scored another run to close in on the Hilltoppers. Jackson Hardy started things off with a bunt single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Nicholas Novak. Hardy placed himself in scoring position after stealing third. With two outs and runners on third and first, Mathiowetz singled to left field to score Hardy and trail 4-2.
- After another scoreless inning, Josh Elvir helped the Rams close the gap on SEU, blasting a leadoff solo homerun over the right field fence to put the Blue and Gold down by one run at 4-3. However, the Hilltoppers responded in the bottom half of the seventh inning, plating three more runs to increase their lead to 7-3.
- The Blue and Gold scored one more run in the top of the ninth to attempt a comeback but fell short, falling 7-4 in the series finale to split the series, 2-2.
Coach Brooks' Comments:
"Not the effort we wanted today, obviously. Defensively, just made too many mistakes and weren't able to pick up the slack. We have a lot of work to do in order to improve and get better and get where we want to be. We will get to work this week and go improve and be ready for a big series verse St. Mary's."
Key Players:
- Mathiowetz led the offense, going 3-for-5 from the plate, driving in two runs, scoring one run, and tallying one double.
- Elvir contributed to the offense with one hit and scored two runs. He tallied another home run on the season and one RBI.
- Two other players tallied one hit, including Hardy who scored one run as well.
- On the mound, Jake Rogers struck out four batters in 3.2 innings while Kyle Moseley and Carson Childers added two more strikeouts a piece.

The Rams return home to host St. Mary's in a four game series beginning on Friday, March 13. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.
