Rams Fall to 22nd-Ranked Lubbock Christian, 87-69

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State men's basketball team couldn't overcome a slow start against 22nd-ranked Lubbock Christian on Thursday, falling to the Chaparrals 87-69 at Stephens Arena at the Junell Center.
 
The loss snaps a two-game win-streak for the Rams who move to 3-4, 3-4 LSC on the season while the Chaps stay perfect at 5-0, 5-0 LSC
 
Lubbock Christian came out to a quick start in the opening half, jumping out to an 11-3 lead after converting a three-point attempt from Ty Caswell. The Chaps moved the ball around well, extending their lead to 20 points while getting eight-plus points from four different players in the first period.
 
Down 35-15, the Rams cut into the deficit as Burone Edwards and Salisa Yahaya hit back-to-back threes before Kevon Godwin converted an and-one, sending the game into halftime with ASU down 45-31.
 
The Chaps finished the game shooting 57 from in the field, including a 65 percent mark in the first half while the Rams shot 47 percent overall, 32 percent from three-point range.
 
Sam Baker led ASU in scoring, tallying 17 points while shooting 5-of-10 from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Behind him, Paul Williams collected 14 points and Edwards finished with 10 points.
 
The Chaps held Angelo State in check under the basket, winning the rebounding battle 35-26 as Caswell and Rowan Mackenzie each collected nine rebounds. Rowan led the Chaps in scoring as well, finishing with 21 points.
 
Godwin opened the second half with a quick bucket for the Rams but LCU continued to find an answer, keeping the lead in favor of the Chaps.
 
Both teams will be back in action on Saturday as the Rams travel to Lubbock for game two of the series with tip-off set for 4 p.m.
