Rams Earn Decisive Victory over UTPB on Homecoming Night

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State football team got back on the winning side of things on Homecoming night, defeating the UT Permian Basin Falcons 34-14 at LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.

With the win, the Rams improve to 5-2 overall on the season and 2-2 in Lone Star Conference play. The Falcons drop to 4-2 overall, losing their first conference game of the season to go 2-1 in the LSC.

ASU's defense stepped up big in front of the home crowd, allowing only one touchdown on defense while totaling five takeaways.

The Rams got on the board first as Asa Fuller knocked down two field goals from 25 and 19 yards out for a 6-0 lead. A few moments later, ASU's Hunter Kyle intercepted the Falcons' quarterback in the middle of the field before returning it for 39-yards and a touchdown to extend the Rams lead with just under two minutes to play in the first quarter.

UTPB scored just before the end of the quarter, connecting on a 62-yard pass to come within one score of the lead.

With the first half coming to a close, Deshaun Douglas forced a fumble in Falcons' territory, setting up a four-yard touchdown pass from Zach Bronkhorst to CJ Odom as the Rams take a 20-7 lead into the break.

The Rams' defense continued to dominate UTPB in the third quarter, holding the Falcons to a punt, a fumble, and turnover on downs in their first three possessions of the second half. Deep in UTPB territory, the Falcons fumbled the snap before Leddy French II recovered the ball for the Rams.

ASU drove 11 yards for the score as Bronkhorst threw his second touchdown pass, this time a two-yard ball to Nathaniel Omayebu III. After stopping UTBP on fourth down, the Rams drove 65 yards for another score from Bronkhorst, this time keeping the ball on an option run before crossing the endzone from two yards out.

The Rams outgained UTPB 413 yards to only 233 yards for the Falcons. ASU finished with 208 yards rushing the ball as Odom finished with a team-high 81 yards while Omayebu collected 77 yards on the ground.

Bronkhorst finished 17-of-34 passing for 205 yards and two touchdowns while Kellon Pachot led the receivers with 84 yards off six catches followed by four catches from Dagen Dunham for 41 yards.

In the fourth quarter, the Falcons saw another drive cut short due to a turnover as ASU safety K'hari Watson picked off a deep pass to end a push by the visitors.

The Rams finished with a season-high five turnovers against the Falcons, recovering two fumbles while intercepting three passes.

Special teams issues continued for ASU as the Falcons returned a blocked punt for a touchdown with 8:31 to go in the fourth quarter, making the score 34-14 in favor of the Rams.

Defensively, Kyle, Simon Maxey, and Josh Quinton each finished with five total tackles while Maxey also added two sacks on the night. French finished with four tackles, an interception, and a fumble recovery.

The Rams stay at home next weekend as they take a break from Lone Star action to face Simon Fraser in a non-conference matchup on Saturday, Oct. 23.
