Belles Claim Road Win over Texas Woman’s with Goals by Griffin, McNeme

Denton, Texas – The Belles Soccer team picked up their second-straight LSC road victory this afternoon against Texas Woman's in a matchup of the two best defenses in the conference. Goals from the Belles' Mariah Griffin and Avery McNeme proved to be the difference in the match.

"I thought the team played really well, we only allowed three shots in the game. I don't care what team you're playing; I don't care there are the top or the bottom, you only allowed three shots, you do a pretty good job defensively," said head coach Travis McCorkle following his team's win. "Unfortunately, one of the goals was just a bomb from distance, and we didn't get pressure quick enough and so we're upset about that, but I felt like that our possession was good. I felt like our desire to compete, and win was good."

The Belles held the Pioneers to only three shots for the entire match, a season-low for the Pioneers.

The visitors had a couple of shots in the early stages of the match but did not have a breakthrough on the scoresheet until the 31st minute, when the freshman Griffin scored her first collegiate goal to give the Belles the lead.

The Belles would double the lead in the 57th minute through Avery McNeme's sixth goal of the season on an effort from outside of the box.

The hosts would pull a goal back only five minutes later, but the Belles' defense tightened after allowing the goal, only allowing a single shot, which was saved by goalkeeper Kira Miller, her only save of the match.

"I know that the girls are putting in extra work before practice and when they do that not only are they getting better, but they're building more of a relationship with their teammates, which makes them more responsible to their teammates and these are things that that we spend a lot of time with on our on our team chemistry," said McCorkle about his team's chemistry today as well as heading into the postseason. "This is a situation where we're at right now, where you can see the fruits of our labor because the team fought hard, and they hunt they fought hard for each other today."

The Belles improve to 12-2-2 overall on the season and 7-2-2 in conference play. They are back in action on Wednesday against St. Edward's on the road.
