AUSTIN – Facing their final road opponent season, the Belles faced St. Edward's on a cold, rainy night in Austin on Wednesday, dropping the match 2-1 in overtime to the Hilltoppers.
"The weather was the great equalizer," said head coach Travis McCorkle after the match. "Take a team that's playing well and doing well, and then you put them in bad and wet and cold weather against a team just plays really direct, and it can be a neutralizing effect on the quality of soccer and I think it was today."
The Belles were outshot for only the second time this season with the hosts managing 11 shots and four on target to the Belles eight shots, with only two of those challenging the Hilltoppers goalkeeper.
Avery McNeme got the Belles on the scoresheet in the early proceedings of the match, scoring a penalty kick in the 16th minute for her seventh goal of the season.
The Hilltoppers equalized in the 33rd minute when Sarah Gunderson found the back of the net. The score stayed 1-all until overtime, when the hosts scored off their third consecutive corner kick to take all three points.
The Belles are now 12-3-2 overall and 7-3-2 in conference play. They close out their season on Saturday at home against Midwestern State.
