SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State football team celebrated senior day with a 30-3 victory over Texas A&M – Commerce on Saturday at LeGrand Stadium at 1
st Community Credit Union Field.
The Rams snapped a six-game losing skid to the Lions, improving to 8-2 overall on the season while going 4-2 in Lone Star Conference play. TAMUC drops to 6-4 overall, 4-2 LSC play.
After a 23-yard field goal by
Asa Fuller gave the Rams an early lead, the Rams added to their lead a couple of drives later, moving the ball 60 yards on five plays.
Zach Bronkhorst found the first touchdown of the game, keeping the ball on an option, running five yards for the score to give ASU a 10-0 lead in the second quarter.
On the next drive for the Rams, ASU drove 75 yards for another touchdown as
Nathaniel Omayebu III took the ball out wide from 10 yards out to make it a three-score lead over Texas A&M – Commerce.
Alfred Grear collected a game-high 73-yards on the ground while Omayebu finished with 51 yards and
CJ Odom added 42 yards rushing.
The Rams outdrove TAMUC 305 yards to 252 yards as ASU collected 169 yards on the ground and 187 throw the air.
The Lions nearly scored a field goal in the closing moments of the first half, setting up for a 46-yard field goal attempt which was blocked as
Devin Washington got his hand on the ball to keep TAMUC off the board.
Bronkhorst finished 13-of-21 passing for 136 yards while adding four yards on the ground with a touchdown.
Kellen Pachot was the leading receiver with four receptions for 46 yards while
Cason Brown added 58 yards on two catches.
The Rams added points on five straight drives, opening the third quarter with another field goal by Fuller, converting from 42-yards out.
For the fourth consecutive game, ASU's defense found a defensive touchdown as
Andrew Pitts picked off a pass before returning it 46-yards for the score, giving the Rams a 27-0 lead.
Fuller continued to have a strong day kicking, converting a 28-yard attempt for his third field goal of the day. He was also a perfect 3-for-3 in PATs.
Starting the fourth quarter, the Lions found their way inside the 10-yard line of ASU, but the Rams came up with the stop again as Washington deflected a pass on fourth to force a turnover on downs.
Defensively,
Hunter Kyle tallied 12 tackles to lead the Rams while Tre'Darious Colbert added seven tackles and
Josh Quinton and
Weston Bauer each added six.
Daron Allman finished with two sacks in the game while Colbert and
O'Shea Jackson each added a sack.
Texas A&M – Commerce would eventually go on to score a field goal, converting from 29-yards out with just over three minutes to go to make it 30-3.
The Rams will close out the regular season next weekend as they travel for an LSC matchup against Texas A&M – Kingsville on Saturday, Nov. 13.
