BROWNWOOD, Texas – Early shooting woes plagued the 18
th-ranked Angelo State men's basketball team on Saturday, falling to St. Edward's 75-59 at the Brownwood Coliseum on the campus of Howard Payne.
The loss is the second in a row for the Rams who move to 7-2 overall on the season while St. Edward's improves to 6-3 overall on the season.
Lathaniel Bastian led the Rams with 16 points, going 5-of-12 from the field and 6-of-9 from the free throw line while adding 11 rebounds for a double-double.
After scoring the first three points of the game, ASU fell behind as the Hilltoppers used a 20-5 run to take a 12-point advantage midway through the first half. The Rams finished the first half 9-of-35 from the field including a 0-for-7 mark from three-point range.
After stringing together another 8-0 run late in the first half, the Hilltoppers settled on a 40-22 advantage heading into the locker room at the half.
The Hilltoppers shot 41 percent on the night compared to 32 percent from ASU while SEU collected 15 points off turnovers. The Rams won the rebounding battle, earning 49 rebounds compared to 41 while totaling 12 fast break points.
The Rams opened the second half with some quick points as
Kendrick Washington hit a three for the first basket of the period. ASU continued to fight but runs of five and eight points early kept it a double-digit lead in favor of the Hilltoppers.
Dante Moses added 10 points and 10 rebounds for another double-double while
Andre Nunley finished with six points and
Miles Macadory,
Tyrell Carroll, and
Devaughn Thomas each finished with five points.
The Rams return to the Junell Center on Monday as they take on St. Mary's in another non-conference matchup with tip-off set for 1 p.m.
