ARKEDELPHIA, Ark. – The Angelo State tennis team split day one of the spring season, sweeping Ouachita Baptist before falling to Harding University 4-3 on the road on Saturday.
Against the Tigers, the Belles started with an early point after sweeping the doubles matches. Valentina Gonzalez and Ena Ovcina swept their match 6-0, before Virginie Becht and Zoe Gubbels won 6-2 while Maria Delgadillo and Ayda Guler also won 6-2.
In singles play, Gubbels and Alexandra Vishnevskaya both won in straight sets 6-3, 6-1. Guler fought off a tiebreaker, winning 6-2, 7-6 (4) while the rest of the team also finished their matches in two sets.
The Belles had a quick start against Harding but couldn't pull it off in the end, losing in the final four spots in the match. ASU won the doubles point again, winning 6-3, 6-3, and 6-2. Gonzalez won her singles match at the No. 1 spot, winning 6-0, 6-0, while Ovcina won at the No. 2 spot. 6-4, 6-1.
Angelo State will now prepare for the ITA Division II Indoor National Championships next week as the Belles open the tournament against Columbus State on Feb. 26.
