No. 3 Belles Sweep Lubbock Christian in Three at Home

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The No. 3 Belles swept the Lubbock Christian Chaparrals in three sets in the first of a two match series. The Belles move to 12-0 overall with a 9-0 conference record, while LCU falls to 3-7 overall and 2-7 in conference play.
 
Angelo State began set one quickly, grabbing multiple kills from Grace White, Kailyn Gilbreath, and Elsa Lamphere to take an early 6-1 lead over LCU. The Chaps broke the Belles rhythm long enough to score a quick kill, but two kills from White and Gilbreath, along with an error from the Chaps brought ASU to a 9-2 lead over LCU.
 
Multiple errors from the Chaps, along with kills from Gilbreath, Sophia Berg, and Nailah Gordon brought Angelo State to lead Lubbock Christian by 10 points, 17-7. A kill from Berg, White, several errors from the Chaps, and a service ace from Lindsey Ledyard gave the Belles their biggest lead of the first set at 13, 23-10.
 
LCU attempted a valiant comeback, scoring five points against the Belles, but a kill from both Alyssa Meyer and White ended set one in favor of the Belles as Angelo State defeated Lubbock Christian, 25-14.
 
Set two began quickly as well for Angelo State as Ledyard registered another ace to kick things off. The Belles then quickly took a 10 point lead over LCU, with Gilbreath and Gordon both registering kills, 11-1. Makenna Hanssen registered three back to back service aces while back to serve for ASU.
 
Multiple kills from Lamphere, Baleigh Allen, and Berg, with several errors from the Chaps, brought ASUs lead to 12 over the Chaps, 19-7. A kill from Berg, plus three straight errors from the Chaps brought set two to an end as Angelo State defeated Lubbock Christian, 25-9.
 
An error from the Chaps sent Ledyard to the service line in the beginning of set three, where she served for four straight points as White, Delaney Fuller, and Gordon all registered a kill to take a 5-0 lead over LCU. Lubbock Christian managed to cut their deficit to three at 7-4, but a kill from Gilbreath sent Chloe Patton to serve for ASU.
 
Patton served for three straight points for the Belles, as several errors from the Chaps grew the Belles lead to seven over LCU, 11-4. Multiple kills from the Chaps and errors on the Belles tied the third set up at 16-16 and at 18-18, but a kill from Gilbreath gave the Belles a one point lead over Lubbock Christian, 19-18.
 
Gilbreath served until the end of the third set, serving for five unanswered points, with kills from Fuller and Allen and errors from the Chaps ended the third set, and the match in favor of the Belles as Angelo State defeated Lubbock Christian, 25-18.

  • Gilbreath led the Belles offense against the Chaps, registering 11 kills and scoring 12.5 points for Angelo State, hitting with a .429 hitting percentage. Gilbreath finished the match with nine assists, three block assists, and six digs against LCU.
  • Ledyard continues to show her abilities as ASUs starting setter, registering 19 assists against Lubbock Christian. She finished the match with two service aces, two block assists, and seven digs, while scoring three points for Angelo State.
  • Patton continues to lead the Belles defensively against their opponents, registering 15 digs against the Chaps. She finished the match with six assists for ASU.

The Belles return to the Stephens Arena as ASU plays Lubbock Christian in their final home match of the 2020 season. The Belles will honor their seniors before the game, with first serve scheduled for 7 p.m.
