SAN ANGELO, Texas – The 11th-ranked Angelo State baseball team earned another opening-series victory on Thursday as the Rams defeated St. Edward's 5-2 in game one at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.
With the win, the Rams improve to 18-3 overall on the season and 13-3 in Lone Star Conference play while SEU falls to 7-13, 7-12 LSC.
The Rams struck first in the contest as Aaron Walters hit a two-out single to the shortstop, bringing around Parker Bramlett for the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning.
SEU quickly tied the game in the third inning, hitting a solo home run down the left-field line to make it 1-1. The Hilltoppers took the lead in the top of the fifth inning, hitting a single to left field to bring around a run with two outs in the inning.
The lead didn't last long for SEU as the Rams tied the game in the bottom half of the inning as Bramlett hit a shot to right-center field, scoring Jackson Hardy for the tie.
After a scoreless sixth inning, the Rams pulled out ahead for the last time, scoring three runs in the inning. Hardy stole second before coming around to score on an error by the Hilltoppers' catcher while Charlie Bartlett hit a chopper over the shortstop for two RBIs, scoring Josh Elvir and Bramlett.
Jake Rogers started on the mound for the Rams, tossing 3 1/3 innings while giving up one run on four hits. Jesse Meyer tossed one inning in relief while Austin Buley threw two innings with four hits and a run. Carson Childers picked up the decision to improve to 4-0 on the season, throwing 2 2/3 innings without giving up a hit.
The Rams and Hilltoppers will continue the series tomorrow night with first pitch set for 6 p.m. at foster field.
