SAN ANGELO, Texas – The 10
th-ranked Angelo State baseball team found some offense late but couldn't overcome an early deficit as the Rams fell to fifth-ranked West Texas A&M 11-6 in game two of the series at Wilder Park.
The Rams move to 20-5 overall on the year and 15-5 in Lone Star Conference play, losing consecutive games for the first time this season. The Buffs improved to 26-3 overall and 23-2 in conference play.
WT jumped out ahead early against the Rams, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first inning, capped off by a three-RBI home run. The Buffs added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring three more after a two-run single and a double made it 9-0.
ASU came to life in the fifth inning as
Josh Elvir hit a two-RBI double to center field to score
Thomas Cain and
Jackson Hardy. The Rams added another run in the inning as
Jordan Williams singled through the right side to score Elvir, making it 9-3.
The Rams got another run back in the sixth inning as Cain grounded out to third base, scoring Nick Novak in the process.
West Texas A&M scored its final two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, hitting a double to center field before coming around to score on a wild pitch, giving the Buffs an 11-4 lead.
The Rams tallied two more runs in the eighth inning as
Jackson Hardy hit a solo home run to left field before
Aaron Walters scored
Koby Kelton on a groundout to second base.
Benjamin Elder suffered his first loss of the season as his record moved to 5-1. Matt Szabo pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief, allowing two runs off of two hits while
Austin Buley tossed 3 1/3 innings with four his and one earned run.
The Rams and Buffs conclude the three-game series tomorrow with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
