ASU Earns Walk-off Win Over UTPB in Seven Innings

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The 11th-ranked Angelo State baseball team led off the series against UT Permian Basin with a win, defeating the Falcons 10-1 in a misty seven-inning game at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.

With the win, the Rams improve to 29-6 overall on the year and 23-5 in Lone Star Conference action while UTPB falls to 12-21, 9-19 LSC.

The Falcons had some early opportunities to bring in a run, putting runners at second and third with no outs in the top of the second inning after leading off with a single and a double. ASU pitcher Trent Baker pitched out of the situation however, forcing a shallow fly out before collected a strikeout and a groundout to keep UTPB scoreless.

Jackson Hardy brought in the first run of the game for the Rams, hitting into a groundout to score Reese Johnson while Aaron Walters hit a sacrifice fly to left field to gives ASU a 2-0 advantage after three innings.

In the fourth, Parker Bramlett reached base on a throwing error before advancing to second on a bunt single by Koby Kelton. The Rams loaded the bases with a single towards third base by Johnson before Hardy forced a walk to bring in the first run of the inning. At the next at bat, Josh Elvir reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Kelton in the process.

The Rams hit back-to-back singles in the fifth, starting with a line drive down the right field line by Nick Novak before Williams hit a shot off the left field wall to extend ASU's lead to 5-0.

Baker tossed a complete seven inning game for the Rams, allowing only four hits and two walks while striking out eight batters to earn his 10th win of the season, improving to 10-1.

Angelo State finished the game in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring five runs to end the game in seven innings. ASU scored the first run of the inning off a wild pitch before a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and a walk brought in two more runs to go up 8-0. Elvir ended the game with a walk-off single up the middle, scoring Johnson and Kelton to seal the win.

The Rams and Falcons continue the series tomorrow night at 6 p.m., weather permitting, at Foster Field.
