No. 17 Angelo State takes on No. 20 Midwestern State in Home Opener

After starting the first two weeks on the road, the 17th-ranked Rams will take a 2-0 record into their first home game of the season as they begin Lone Star Conference play against No.20 Midwestern State.
 
LAST WEEK:
In a tale of two halves, the Rams overcame a 24-point deficit to defeat Chadron State 28-24 in last week's road victory. The Eagles took an early lead before going up 24-0 midway through the second quarter. ASU tallied their first score right before the end of the first half, coming out hot in the second, scoring 21 unanswered points while keeping Chadron State off the board. Zach Bronkhorst totaled four touchdowns in the game, two on the ground and two passing.

The Mustangs hold the advantage over the Rams in their history, winning 15 of the 23 matchups overall. The Rams picked up a win in the last meeting against MSU, winning at home 28-6 while allowing a touchdown in the last two minutes of the game after going up 28-0.
 
SCOUTING MIDWESTERN STATE:
The Mustangs have had a very similar a start to their season as Angelo State, entering the weekend 2-0 after overcoming a large road deficit in their last matchup to remain undefeated. Against No. 7 Texas A&M-Commerce, the Mustangs fell behind by 23 points before marching back and eventually pulling off the upset with a touchdown pass in the final 30 seconds of the game to win 31-30. Midwestern State also started the season on the road, earning a decisive victory over Quincy, 48-27.
 
MSU is averaging just under 40 points per game to start the year while collecting 392.5 yards per game on offense. They are fairly even on the ground and through the air, gaining 486 yards rushing and 395 yards passing.
 
Running backs Jalen March and Trenton Jackson have both tallied over one hundred yards rushing at 114 and 102 respectively while K' Vonte Jackson has 96 yards. Dillon Sterling-Cole is the leading passer for the Mustangs, completing 59.6 percent of his passing for 376 yards and five touchdowns along with one interception. Defensively, MSU has collected 10 sacks on the year with four interceptions and five forced fumbles to lead the Lone Star Conference.
 
After starting last week out of the top 25 rankings, the Mustangs jumped to No. 20 in the AFCA Coaches' Top 25 Poll after their win over the Lions.   
 
QUICK HITS:
SUCCESS ON THE GROUND:
The Rams have tallied the second most rushing yards in the Lone Star Conference at 425 total yards on the ground. CJ Odom ranks second in the conference with 197 yards while Nathaniel Omayebu III in sixth with 158 yards.
 
TWO-WAY THREAT:
Bronkhorst has had a strong showing in his first two games of the season, accounting for five total touchdowns. He ranks second in the conference in total offense with 554 yards, averaging 277 per game.
 
CLIMBING THE RANKS:
For the second consecutive week, the Rams have moved up in the AFCA rankings, going from No. 22 to No. 17 in this week's poll after the comeback win over Chadron State.
 
STOPPING THE RUN:
The Rams continue to give opposing running backs trouble, giving up the second fewest rushing yards in the LSC at 50.5 yards per game. They also rank 15th in all of Division II for rushing defense.
 
STANDOUT WIDEOUT:
Kellen Pachot has been a favorite target in the first two games of the season, catching nine passes for 186 yards which is the second most in the conference. He is averaging 20.7 yards per catch and has collected two touchdowns.
 
DEFENSE STANDOUTS:
  • Daron Allman leads the LSC with two forced fumbles and is tied for seventh in the conference in total tackles with 13 along with Hunter Kyle. Allman is also second in the conference in tackles for loss with four.
  • Darrick Dickerson Jr. is fifth in the conference in sacks with 1.5.
