SAN ANGELO – Looking to rebound from their conference-opening loss Wednesday against St. Mary's, the Belles welcomed Eastern New Mexico for the Belles conference home opener. In a match where the Belles outshot the Greyhounds 21-1 overall, including 16 first half shots, and nine total shots on target, the difference between the two teams on the scoresheet proved to be
Valerie Solis' penalty kick goal in the 53
rd minute.
The Belles' high-pressing system was effective early, earning the hosts six shots in the match's first 15 minutes.
"When we're going to press or win the ball back, the problem is that when we win it, we're so collapsed on top of them that there's no space to pass the ball, so you end up with an off-balance shot that's not on target," said head coach
Travis McCorkle on his team not being able to convert any chances they created in the first half.
The Belles continued to push early in the second half, drawing a yellow card on a Greyhounds defender before earning a penalty in the 53
rd minute after the visitors committed a handball inside the penalty area.
Solis, the junior midfielder, calmly stepped up and slotted away her first goal of the season, the lone goal which proved to be the difference in the match.
"I think our defense had a good response," said McCorkle about the defense in response to their performance on Wednesday. "I think our midfield and our attacking is still a little bit off right now."
The Belles are now 6-1 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. They return to the pitch on Wednesday when they host Texas A&M International.
