LAWTON, Okla. – The Angelo State men's basketball team traveled to Lawton, Okla., and grinded out an 89-83 victory over Cameron in the Aggie Gym on Saturday afternoon.
The Rams earn their third consecutive over the Aggies while improving to 13-4 overall and 3-2 in Lone Star Conference play. Cameron drops to 2-9 and 0-5 in conference action.
ASU shot 43 percent from the field on 25-of-58 shooting, including 11 made threes. The Rams scored 28 points from the free throw line, shooting a 78 percent clip.
Tyrell Carroll led all scorers with 22 points, adding three rebounds, and two assists.
Paul Williams scored 21 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including five threes.
After trading buckets through the first four minutes, the Rams stretched the lead to nine, 17-8, following two three pointers by
Devaughn Thomas and a dunk from
Salisu Yahaya.
The Rams continued to build on their lead with 6:24 to go in the first half after a
Lathaniel Bastian layup. Cameron went on a 5-0 run of their own to cut the lead back to five before the Rams took a 42-39 advantage into halftime.
Dante Moses scored 16 points and grabbed eight boards in the contest, while Bastian had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Carroll completed a three-point play with 16:58 to go in the second frame to put the Rams up 55-44, their largest lead of the game.
The teams continued to trade leads down the stretch before Cameron went on an 8-2 run of their own to regain the lead, 81-80, with 2:29 to go.
Moses hit a three pointer with 1:40 remaining to give the Rams the lead for the remainder of the contest. A late three-point play from Bastian and two free throws from both Carroll and Moses put the game away for ASU.
The Rams return home next week to face the top-ranked Lubbock Christian at the Junell Center on Saturday, Jan. 27
th at 7:30 p.m.
