Oklahoma City, Okla. – The Angelo State volleyball team, unlike last night against UAFS, got off to a quick start Saturday afternoon against Oklahoma Christian, winning the first two sets against the Eagles. However, the hosts rebounded to win sets three, four, and five to claim the win over the Rambelles, who wrap up their road schedule with a 4-6 record this fall.
With the loss, the Belles drop to 11-15 overall and 7-7 in conference play. They sit in eighth place, the final conference tournament spot, and are only one game ahead of Lubbock Christian and UTPB.
Both the first two sets were tight between the two sides, with the Belles claiming 27-25 and 26-24 set victories.
The Eagles eked out a 25-23 set three win before winning the fourth set 25-20.
The Belles made a comeback from an 8-3 deficit in the fifth set to take the lead late, even having two match points to their name, while the Eagles converted their third match point to claim the victory 20-18.
Elsa Lamphere paced everyone offensively with a career-high 22 kills and recorded a career-high 18 digs for her fifth double-double this season.
Graduate student
Grace White tied her career watermark with 14 kills in the match while also hitting .429; she also achieved that kill mark last November in San Antonio against St. Mary's.
Kaila Garnett and Hannah Kinnison each contributed 11 kills, while
Caleigh Enax and Marina Sanchez had eight. Sanchez and White also led the team with five blocks on the afternoon.
Laney Dale set a new season-high in an ASU uniform with 39 assists, earning her sixth double-double of the season with 26 digs, shattering her previous season best of 15.
Fellow setter Kayla Baer recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 23 assists and 16 digs.
Perhaps the most notable performance for the Belles belongs to freshman libero Ireland Ferguson. Donning the number 22 jersey instead of her normal number, 7, the Floridian recorded 39 digs on the defensive end.
Entering this afternoon's match, Ferguson only had 71 digs on the season, with today's total representing 35.5 of all digs she's recorded this season. The 39 digs are the second-most any Belle has recorded in a single match in the rally-scoring era (since 2001). It is also tied for the second-most digs any player in the LSC has recorded in a single match this season.
The only Belle to better that mark was Shelby Wilt back on October 26
th, 2012, against West Texas A&M, where Wilt recorded 41 digs that day.
The Belles close their season next weekend at home against DBU and UT Tyler.
