WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The No. 2-ranked Angelo State football team finished the 2022 regular-season undefeated as the Rams downed Midwestern State 37-19 at Memorial Stadium.
With the win, the Rams improve to 11-0 overall on the season and 9-0 in Lone Star Conference play while picking up the first win in Wichita Falls since the 2014 season.
ASU opened the scoring in the first quarter as Zach Bronkhorst hit Kason Philips on a screen pass for 13 yards and a touchdown to go up 7-0.
After the Mustangs hit a field goal for their first points of the game, the Rams moved down the field, adding another score before the end of the first quarter as Bronkhorst connected with Rasheen Green for his second touchdown pass, this time for 18 yards.
Bronkhorst finished with 173 yards on 18 completions with two touchdowns in the game while Noah Massey was the leading receiver with 40 yards on four catches.
Both teams traded field goals in the second quarter with MSU making a 30-yard attempt while Asa Fuller converted from 38-yards out for the Rams to make it 17-6 at the break.
The Rams edged out the Mustangs in offensive yards, 337 compared to 320 while ASU's defense tallied three interceptions in the contest.
In the third quarter, ASU added to its lead as Philips found the end zone for the second time in the game, this time running for a 33-yard touchdown. He finished the game with 81 yards on the ground and 24 receiving yards.
Towards the end of the third, ASU's Eric Rascoe picked off MSU's quarterback before returning it for a touchdown to extend the lead to 31-6.
The Mustangs kept things interesting in the fourth quarter, scoring two touchdowns, one on a 20-yard run and the other on a three-yard pass to make it 31-19.
With 2:21 to go in the game, the Rams added one more score as Nate Omayebu III threw the first touchdown pass of his career, finding Cason Brown for 33 yards to put the game away.
Jordan McKinney was the leading tackler for ASU, tallying 10 tackles including eight solo while Josh Booker-Brown finished with five tackles and a sack.
The Rams will wait for the NCAA Division II Football Selection Show to find out their seed in Super Region 4 which airs tomorrow at 4:30 CST on NCAA.com. The top seed will receive a bye in the opening round of the national championship tournament.
