SILVER CITY, New Mexico – After struggling from the field and trailing for the majority of the game, the Angelo State women's basketball team completed an 11-point comeback to down Western New Mexico 54-50 in Silver City Friday evening.
The Rambelles improve to 10-2 on the season and are now 5-1 in Lone Star Conference action. The Mustangs fall to 2-7 on the year and remain winless, 0-5, in conference play.
40 MINUTE RUNDOWN
- Brighton Adams and Madeline Stephens scored the first two buckets for the Rambelles as the teams were knotted 4-4 in a slow developing first quarter.
- Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant scored four points down the stretch, but the Mustangs took a 12-11 advantage into the second frame.
- WNMU came out hot in the second quarter, scoring 10 of the first 12 points to jolt ahead 22-13 with 6:26 before the break.
- The Rambelles battled their way back into the contest behind five points from McGhee-Pleasant and a layup from Sawyer Lloyd to go into the half down six, 26-20.
- The Mustangs again came out hot to start the third, extending their lead to 11, 35-24 with 6:49 still remaining in the third.
- Briley Merket and Alexandra Bednarczyk both provided some valuable points off the bench as the Rambelles pulled back within seven, trailing 37-30 with 3:20 left in the quarter.
- A Merket triple pulled the Rambelles within four, 39-35, but the Mustangs outscored the Blue and Gold 6-2 in the last 1:26 to take a 45-37 lead heading into the fourth.
- Free throw makes by McGhee-Pleasant and Merket pulled the Rambelles back within four, 45-41 with just over eight minutes remaining.
- The Mustangs would fight back and bring their lead back to nine before the Rambelles scored seven straight to pull within two,50-48, with 3:43 to go.
- Stephens tied the game up with 2:17 to go and pulled the Rambelles ahead for the first time since the first quarter after hitting a pair of free throws with 33 second remaining.
- Stephens would hit two final free throws as the Rambelles would escape Silver City with a 54-50 victory.
GAME STATS
- McGhee-Pleasant led all scorers with 19 points and a season-high 17 rebounds in her fourth double-double of the season.
- Lloyd had 11 points, Stephens and Merket both had 10 to round out the double-digit scorers for the Rambelles.
- Merket set her new career high with her 10 points off the bench.
- Both teams struggled from the field, the Rambelles shot 31 percent from the field while the Mustangs were just ahead of them shooting 32 percent on 21-65 shooting.
- The Mustangs cleaned up the glass, outrebounding the Rambelles 47-42 in the contest.
- The Rambelles trailed for 29:45 seconds of the contest and only led for 2:34 in the victory.
- The Rambelles continued to force play good defense, forcing the Mustangs into 19 turnovers, led by four steals from Adams.
