Five Double-Digit Scorers Lift Rams over Eagles

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The Angelo State men's basketball team came out on top for their second straight victory, beating Oklahoma Christian in dominant fashion, 91-79 at the Dave Smith Athletic Center.

The win improves the Rams to 18-8 on the season and 8-6 in Lone Star Conference play, which finds them in the eight seed. The loss for the Eagles sets them at 8-17 and 4-10 in LSC action.

The Rams shot 53 percent on the evening, holding OC to 46 percent from the field. ASU dominated in the paint, outscoring the Eagles 50-28 in the paint, while out rebounding the Eagles 40-30. OC did shoot well from beyond the arc in the contest, making 7-of-16, 44 percent, while the Rams made six threes, shooting a respectable 33 percent.

Lathaniel Bastian would be one of five double-digit scorers for the Rams, leading the team with 19 points and eight boards off the bench. Kelyn Pennie would add 15 points from the bench as well on 4-of-7 shooting.

The only lead for the Eagles on the evening came following an opening layup. The Rams would score 26 of the next 39 points to jump ahead 26-15 with 9:54 to go in the first half.

OC would begin to chip away at the lead bringing it down to six 32-26 with six minutes to go in the half. A layup by Tyrell Carroll would pull the Rams ahead by 12, their largest lead of the first half with 1:17 to go. The Eagles would get one final bucket and ASU would take a 46-36 lead into halftime.

Carroll put together another nice stat line with 15 points, six assists, and six boards. Dante Moses and Devaughn Thomas would round out the double-digit scorers for the Rams with 16 and 11 respectively. Salisu Yahaya would contribute eight points and nine boards as he was close to a double-double on the night.

A pair of free throws from Moses put the Rams ahead 52-38 with 17:12 remaining. The ASU offense would then catch fire, scoring 14 straight points, surging the Rams ahead 72-45, their largest lead of the game at 27.

The Eagles were never able to reel in the Rams from that point, with 1:23 remaining, OC cut the lead to 13. Four free throws by Pennie and a bucket by Peyton Black would round out the scoring for the Rams as they would complete the perfect week on the road.

The Rams are back in action at home next week to wrap up the LSC regular season schedule, facing Texas A&M-Commerce Thursday the 24th at 7:30 p.m. at the Junell Center.
