SAN ANGELO – Coming off a week in which they were on the road in the Southeast, the Angelo State women's tennis team is on the road once again, facing a familiar for in conference rivals St. Mary's in San Antonio tomorrow.
The Belles are 8-4 overall on the season and 1-0 in conference play; they are coming off a week in which they beat Spring Hill 7-0 before dropping matches to #13 West Alabama and #24 West Florida.
The Belles have been led on the singles side by Dianela Rodriguez. The Belles' number two is 12-3 in singles play this season and is ranked 29th in the latest version of the ITA rankings. Teammate Valentina Gonzalez is also nationally ranked in singles play, coming in at 55th in the country. The Belles have also found consistent play down the line-up in Ramitha Irrinki and Eva Schwartz, who are 9-2 and 8-3 in singles play.
On the doubles side, Gonzalez and partner Ena Ovcina are 20th in the ITA rankings. The ITA South Central champions are 13-5 in doubles play this season as the Belles have claimed the doubles point in 11 of their 12 matches this spring.
SCOUTING THE RATTLERS
St. Mary's is 8-2 overall on the season but only 2-2 against Division II opposition, having also claimed a win over Division I opponent UTRGV; this match will represent their conference opener.
The Rattlers boast three singles players in the top 75 of the ITA rankings – Maria Garcia, who is 13th with an 8-2 record; Ashley Penshorn, who is 18th with a 7-4 record; and 65th-ranked Marina Vigil, who is 6-3 in singles play.
The Rams are 1-3 against the Rattlers, with their lone win coming last season in San Angelo.
Following this weekend, the Belles are back home to face DBU and Midwestern State next weekend.
