SAN ANGELO, Texas – The 10th-ranked Angelo State baseball team swept the doubleheader against Texas A&M – Kingsville on Saturday, winning game one 15-3 and game two 13-4 at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.
With the pair of wins, the Rams improve their record to 23-6 overall and 21-6 in Lone Star Conference play.
GAME 1: ASU 15, TAMUK 3
The Rams jumped out ahead early in game one of the day, scoring two runs in the first inning off groundouts by
Aaron Walters and
Justin Lee.
TAMUK got one run back in the top of the third, scoring on a ground out to cut the lead in half.
Extra base hits were the key for the Rams in the third inning as they tallied four runs off two doubles by Walters and
Austin Beck, and a two-run homer by
Kamden Kelton to give ASU a 6-1 lead.
The Javelinas led off the fourth inning with a double before scoring another run on a single to center field to make it 6-2 in favor of the Rams.
Jake Rogers started on the mound for ASU, tossing a complete seven-inning game as he gave up only three runs off of six hits while striking out two batters, including the final out of the game.
The Rams pulled away even farther in the fifth inning, scoring nine total runs to put the game out of reach. ASU loaded the bases with three straight singles before
Tayten Tredaway brought in the first run with a single to center field before
Tyler Boggs was struck by a pitch for another run.
Justin Harris hit a two-RBI single followed by RBI singles by
Jackson Hardy,
Koby Kelton, and Walters. Beck Closed out the inning with a ground-rule double, bringing in two more runs to extend ASU's lead to 15-2.
GAME 2: ASU 13, TAMUK 7
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Javelinas struck first, hitting a two-run homer in the second inning.
The lead wasn't with TAMUK for long as the Rams tied the game in the bottom of the frame as
Koby Kelton singled to right-center, scoring both Boggs and
Tripp Clark to tie the game.
The Javelinas got another run back in the third, hitting a sac-fly to center field to go up 3-2.
ASU found a quick answer again, scoring two in the bottom of the third as Walters hit a solo home run before Boggs hit an RBI double to give the Rams their first lead of the game.
Aaron Munson started game two for the Rams, tossing six innings with four runs off of five hits while striking out six batters.
The Rams pulled away in the bottom of fifth once again as Boggs cleared the bases with a grand slam to left field to extend ASU's lead to 8-3. Walters added another run in the inning, hitting a single to score Kelton.
In the bottom of the sixth,
Justin Harris hit a two-RBI single before the Rams added two runs off two errors to take a 13-4 advantage.
TAMUK added a few more runs in the top of the seventh off a three-run homer but it wouldn't be enough.
The Rams and Javelinas will close out the series tomorrow with game four beginning at 1 p.m.
