SAN ANGELO, Texas – The seventh-ranked Angelo State baseball avoided the sweep by No. 14 West Texas A&M, defeating the Buffs 12-6 in game four on Sunday at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.
With the win, the Rams improve to 28-10 overall on the year and 26-10 in Lone Star Conference action.
The Buffs struck first, scoring a run in the top of the first inning but the lead would quickly change as ASU tallied six runs in the bottom half of the inning. Aaron Walters got things going for the Rams, hitting a three-run homer over the left-field wall. Tayten Tredaway followed that up with an RBI double while Thomas Cain singled for another run. An error allowed Tredaway to score, giving the Rams a 6-1 advantage.
In the second inning, WT scored three runs after hitting a solo home run and two RBI singles to cut into the lead.
ASU answered again as Justin Lee singled with two outs before Jordan Williams and Tredaway hit back-to-back doubles to go up 8-4.
Carson started on the bump for the Rams, throwing six innings of work with six runs on 11 hits and four strikeouts as he improves to 4-2 overall this season.
The Buffs kept up the fight, scoring one run in the fifth and the sixth to make it 8-6 in favor of the Rams.
ASU continued to find a way to respond, scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth beginning with a double by Austin Beck to score Cain. Walters hit a groundout to the pitcher, allowing Beck to score after advancing to third on a sac-bunt by Koby Kelton.
The Rams added a couple more insurance runs in the eighth inning as Kelton hit a sac-fly to center field to score Cain and Lee reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Beck to come around to home.
Jackson Haga picked up his second save of the season as he threw three innings of relief with no runs and only two hits.
Walters finished the day with four RBIs while Cain led the team with three hits and Beck led in runs scored with three.
The Rams prepare for a short week as they travel for a four-game series against Eastern New Mexico beginning on Thursday, April 14.
