Tyler, Texas – A bold and brilliant performance from Rambelles' ace
Genesis Armendariz was not enough for the Angelo State softball team to win their opener at the South Central Regional, falling to Lubbock Christian 6-5 after a grueling 13-inning battle between the two teams.
The all-region pitcher threw all 12 innings for the Rambelles, throwing 176 pitches. She surrendered 17 hits and six runs (five earned) while walking five and striking out seven.
The 12 innings of work are the most by an LSC pitcher since Breanna Smith from Texas A&M-Kingsville also threw 12 innings against Cameron on March 28
th, 2018.
Her 12 innings is also a new school record, besting the previous record of 11 innings by Kenedy Urbany vs. Cameron on March 22, 2014.
Most impressively, however, might be that Armendariz threw eight shutout innings, from the fourth inning to the 12
th inning, against one of the nation's best offenses.
The Lady Chaps started the scoring off in the first inning, with the Lady Chaps' leadoff hitter reaching on a single and eventually scoring on a wild pitch.
After making a great diving play in right field,
Bailey Martinez homered in the top of the second inning to tie the game at 1-all.
The Lady Chaps would retake the lead in the bottom half of the inning before a Paxton Schuerer two-run home run would give the Rambelles a 3-2 lead; the Lady Chaps would score twice in the bottom half of the inning to take a 4-3 lead.
The Rambelles trailed until the seventh inning.
Haylie Mitchell singled and stole second to set up
Mykayla Stroud, who singled over the third baseman's head, with Mitchell crossing the plate to even the score.
The Rambelles loaded the bases in the eighth inning but could not score, while the Lady Chaps packed the bags in the 11
th but also failed to score.
A 4-4 tied game went until the 12
th inning when Lerma led the inning off with a bunt single before stealing second and advancing to third on a Scheurer groundout. A
Lindsey Evans groundout scored Lerma to give the Rambelles the lead.
The Lady Chaps responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning to extend the game before scoring the walk-off win in the 13
th inning.
The Rambelles will face eight-seed Colorado Christian tomorrow at 3 p.m. in an elimination game. The winner will then play at 6 p.m. against the loser of UT Tyler/LCU, also in an elimination game.
