Rams Fall Late to the Mavericks in Game One of the Super Regionals

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The fifth-ranked Angelo State baseball team faced off against No. 10 Colorado Mesa in game one of the South Central Super Regionals on Friday, falling 12-8 after a late comeback by the Mavericks at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.
 
With the loss, the Rams move to 48-12 overall and will face the Mavericks in an elimination game tomorrow at 3 p.m. If ASU takes a win, game three will follow.
 
ASU came out scoring in the bottom of the first inning, putting up three runs capped off by a two-RBI double by Jordan Williams.
 
The Mavericks answered back in the second, scoring two runs on a triple and a single to come within one run of the lead. CMU took their first lead of the game in the fourth, scoring two runs on a single to right field to go up 4-3.
 
Benjamin Elder started on the mound for the Rams, throwing 6 1/3 innings with seven earned runs off seven hits. Kyle Moseley tossed 1 2/3 innings in relief, collected two strikeouts with one hit.
 
In the bottom of the frame, the Rams answered back immediately as Tripp Clark hit a two-run homer to left field to give the lead back to ASU.
 
A solo shot by the Mavericks' Haydn McGeary in the fifth tied the game at 5-5. After a scoreless inning in the sixth, the Mavericks found two more runs after a lead off triple and a balk call brought in one run before McGeary hit another home run to give CMU a 7-5 advantage.
 
In the eighth inning, Justin Lee tied the game with a two-run home run over the center field wall before Thomas Cain hit an RBI double to give the Rams an 8-7 advantage heading into the ninth.
 
The Mavericks completed the comeback, tallying five runs in the ninth while hitting a two-run single and a two-run triple to seal game one.
