SAN ANGELO – A defensive slugfest between Angelo State and St. Mary's on Thursday night in San Antonio culminated in
Willie Guy hitting a step-back jumper with 2.5 seconds to give the Rams a hard-fought 62-60 win over the Rattlers.
The Rams got off to a hot start, jumping to a 17-5 lead early in the contest; however, the Rattlers entered the break with a two-point advantage.
The Rams held a three-point lead late before a Tyler Caron three-pointer tied the game for the Rattlers with nine seconds left in the contest. Guy then received the inbounds pass and drove down the court; going full speed towards the right block, Guy stepped back and hit the shot to give the Rams their first road win of 2023.
The Rams' point guard scored six points in the contest, with four coming in the game's final 22 seconds. The Iowa native grabbed a pair of rebounds and steals, blocking a shot and assisting twice.
The Rams shot 41.1 percent from the field while holding the hosts to 36.5 percent shooting from the field. The Rams outscored the Rattlers in the paint (26-16) and off of turnovers (27-10) and scored 19 fast-break points to the Rattlers' six.
The Rams also forced the Rattlers into 20 turnovers.
Kevon Godwin led all players with 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting, making three of his four attempts from three-point range.
Reggie Quezada and
Devaughn Thomas scored 11 points; Quezada secured three steals, and Thomas grabbed six rebounds and blocked two shots.
Fredelin De La Cruz fell shy of a double-double, scoring eight points and grabbing nine rebounds.
The Rams improve to 14-3 on the season and 10-1 in conference play; they remain atop the conference standings and close their weekend off on Saturday against St. Edward's, whom themselves are coming off a win against UT Permian Basin.
