SAN ANGELO – A tightly-contested contest between the Angelo State men's basketball team and Western New Mexico came down to the last shots of the game, and the Rams'
Kevon Godwin hit a turnaround jumper with 4.1 seconds left on the clock to lift the Rams over the Mustangs 78-77 inside Stephens Arena at the Junell Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Rams improve to 18-3 on the season and 14-1 in Lone Star Conference play; they sit alone atop the LSC West Division and the LSC standings. The win also sees the Rams complete the season sweep of the Mustangs, and the Rams close out their busiest stretch of the season unblemished.
The Rams are currently on a nine-game winning streak, tied for the fifth-longest streak in program history; it is also the longest winning streak for the Rams since the 2000-01 season, which was also a nine-game streak.
A pair of layups from Jaylin McFadden turned a three-point deficit into a one-point lead for the visitors with only 23 seconds left, forcing a Ram timeout. The ensuing possession saw Godwin drive the ball down the right side of the lane before planting his leg and turning around to hit the deciding shot in the contest.
Godwin led all players with 21 points, shooting 8-of-10 from the field; he made two of three three-point attempts and assisted four times.
The Rams shot 52.6 percent from the field for the game and made a third of their three-point attempts.
Fredelin De La Cruz added 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting in 23 minutes; the senior forward grabbed a team-high nine rebounds while blocking a shot and recording two steals.
Willie Guy scored eight points, making a pair of threes; the Rams' point guard also led the team with five assists on the game. The Rams assisted 16 times on their 30 made field goals as a team.
The Rams kick off a four-game road trip next weekend, facing tough tests in Lubbock Christian and West Texas A&M.
