No. 20 Rams Down Javelinas 38-16 on the Road

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The 20th-ranked Angelo State football team earned a decisive road victory over Texas A&M -Kingsville, winning 38-16 on the road at Pepsi Field at Javelina Stadium on Saturday night.
 
With the win, the Rams improved to 4-2 overall on the year and 3-1 in Lone Star Conference play while earning their 10th straight win over the Javelinas.
 
The Javelinas struck first, converting a 35-yard field goal attempt for the first score of the game.
 
In the second quarter, the Rams took the lead as Gerald Gardner found Brayden Wilcox on a 26-yard touchdown pass to make it 7-3.
 
TAMUK added another field goal later in the quarter, this time from 48 yards out, to make it a one-point game with just under five minutes to go in the first half.
 
ASU's defense set up another score as Kason McCullough-Cooper intercepted a pass with 2:36 to play in the half. Gardner scrambled to the right before tossing a pass to Zorhan Rideaux in the corner of the endzone for a touchdown as the Rams took a 14-6 lead into the break.
 
The Rams tallied 305 yards of total offense with 207 yards coming through the air. ASU's defense held the Javelinas to 267 yards and only 78 yards on the ground.
 
The Rams opened the third quarter by extending the lead as Gardner tossed his third touchdown pass of the game, finding Wilcox for a 70-yard catch-and-run to put the Rams up 21-6.
 
Wilcox led the Rams in receiving with 111 yards on four catches and two touchdowns. He also added 34 yards on the ground with nine attempts.
 
The Javelinas tallied their third field goal of the game later in the quarter, converting from 42 yards out.
 
Gardner extended ASU's lead with his fourth touchdown of the game, this time keeping it on the ground from four yards out. He finished the night 13-of-23 with 202 yards passing, three passing touchdowns, and no interceptions.
 
McCullough-Cooper tallied his second interception of the game moments later, setting up a five-yard touchdown pass from Braeden Fuller to Mekhi Greer to give ASU a 35-9 lead with four minutes to go in the third quarter.
 
In the fourth quarter, the Javelinas found their first touchdown of the game, rushing the ball from one yard out.
 
Later in the fourth quarter, Bradley Larson converted a 24-yard field goal to make it 38-16 with 12:15 to play.
 
Andrew Pitts finished with nine tackles in the game to lead the Rams while Eric Rascoe and Eugene Liger both finished with seven tackles each. The Rams collected four interceptions on the night to win the turnover battle.
 
The Rams will be back at home next weekend as they host UT Permian Basin on Saturday, Oct. 21 on Homecoming.
