No.19 Rams fall to UTPB 28-23 at Home

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The 19th-ranked Angelo State football team fell at home against UT Permian Basin, losing 28-23 on Homecoming night at LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Field.
 
With the loss, the Rams move to 4-3 overall on the year and 3-2 in Lone Star Conference play, while the Falcons improve to 7-1, 5-0 LSC.
 
The Rams stuck first in their first drive of the game, converting a 48-yard field goal attempt by Bradley Larson.
 
Later in the first quarter, Kason McCullough-Cooper blocked a field goal attempt by the Falcons before Andrew Pitts picked up the ball, returning it 59 yards for a touchdown to give ASU a 10-0 advantage.
 
The Falcons answered back midway through the second quarter, tossing a 16-yard touchdown pass for their first score of the night.
 
ASU's first offensive touchdown of the night came as Gerald Gardner scrambled before running the ball eight yards for the score. Gardner finished with 122 yards passing on 17 completions while adding 13 yards on the ground.
 
With less than a minute to go in the first half, the Falcons closed the gap with another touchdown pass, this one going for 32 yards to make it 17-14.
 
Larson added another field goal as time expired in the second quarter, making the second from 36 yards out.
 
The Falcons finished with 366 yards of total offense in the game, including 163 yards on the ground while the Rams collected 280 yards of offense.
 
UTPB started things off in the second half, scoring on a seven-yard pass play to take its first lead of the night at 21-20.
 
ASU regained the lead briefly as Larson hit his third field goal of the game, converting from 27 yards.
 
Brayden Wilcox led the rushing attack for ASU with 81 yards while Kel Williams finished with four receptions for 46 yards.
 
The Falcons scored the final touchdown of the game with just under three minutes to play in the third quarter, hitting a 14-yard touchdown pass to make it 28-23.
 
Eric Rascoe led the Rams defensively with 11 total tackles while Josh Booker-Brown and Amieh Williams each recorded nine on the night.
 
The Rams continue LSC play on the road as they travel to West Texas A&M on Saturday, Oct. 28.
