SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State men's basketball team played their first game inside the Junell Center – Stephens Arena in over nine months this evening against Arlington Baptist, and with a 111-68 victory over the Patriots, the Rams channeled their inner Dorothy Gale from
The Wizard of Oz, proving that there is no place like home.
The Rams' 111 points scored and the 43-point victory margin are new program watermarks under head coach
Vinay Patel. The 111 points are the most the Rams have scored in a single game since scoring 115 against McMurry on December 14
th, 2015.
The Rams slowly pulled away from the Patriots in the beginning before a 16-0 run over a 3:53 span in the first half saw the Rams blow the game open, ending the half with a 29-point lead over ABU.
The Rams shot 60.6 percent from the field and 57.1 percent from three-point land as every Ram who suited up would find the score sheet, and six Rams scored ten or more points.
Willie Guy and
Carvell Teasett led the Rams with 17 points each, both season-bests for the guard combination. Guy went 5-for-7 from deep while Teasett shot 6-for-7 from the field and 5-for-6 from three-point range. Guy also led the team with eight assists and three steals, and Teasett had five assists and four rebounds.
Kevon Godwin scored 16 points, converting half of his eight attempts from deep. He grabbed five rebounds and had six assists as the Rams out-assisted the Patriots 28-12.
Kendrick Delahoussaye scored a season-high 14 points in 25 minutes off the bench, shooting 5-for-9 from the field and hitting a pair of threes.
Forwards
Trey Farrer and
DJ Freeman had 12 and ten points, respectively. Farrer scored his dozen points in only 13 minutes of action, and Freeman led the Rams' rebounding effort with eight boards; as a team, the Rams out-rebounded the Patriots 48-18.
DJ Basey had eight points, seven rebounds, and a pair of blocks; fellow big man
Chris Boekhorst played in his first game since March 3
rd, 2022, scoring four points and grabbing a pair of rebounds.
Shemar Smith,
Barlow Alleruzzo IV, and
BJ Anderson each chipped in three points; Wall products
Jacob Richardson and
Everson Armstrong scored their first collegiate points, with Richardson doing so on a baseline jumper and Armstrong's points coming at the charity stripe.
The Rams are now 3-1 on the season and 1-0 on their home court; they improve to 14-0 inside the Junell Center – Stephens Arena under Patel. The Rams are back in action tomorrow in an exhibition against Division I North Texas in Denton, with that game scheduled to tip off at 2 p.m.
