Kingsville, Texas – The Angelo State softball team avoided a sweep at the hands of Texas A&M-Kingsville, bouncing back from their two losses yesterday to defeat the Javelinas 2-1 to close the series.
The Javelinas opened the scoring in the first inning, scoring on a passed ball by Rambelle pitcher
Cheyenne Floyd.
The Rambelles evened the score in the third inning, with
Ashlyn Lerma leading off the inning with a single before advancing on a
Paxton Scheurer single and scoring on an RBI single by
Lindsey Evans.
Lerma led off the fifth inning by reaching on a Javelina error before stealing second. Scheurer drew a walk to set up
Bailey Martinez, whose single down the left field line plated Lerma and gave the Rambelles the 2-1 lead.
Having driven in the winning run, Martinez sealed the victory defensively for the Rambelles in the seventh. With runners on first and second and one out, Kayla Gonzales lined to Martinez, who secured the ball before tagging out the runner at first to end the game on an unassisted double play.
Ashton McMillan and Martinez both collected two hits for the Rambelles as the top six hitters in the lineup tallied at least one hit.
Floyd collected the win, striking out nine batters while scattering six walks and four hits on one run;
Genesis Armendariz pitched the final 0.2 innings in relief of Floyd, forcing the lineout en route to her first save of the season.
The Rambelles improve to 21-14 on the season and 13-11 in conference play. They are next in action this upcoming weekend as they host St. Mary's in a three-game series.
