SAN ANGELO – On a day in which the Angelo State softball team honored their four seniors –
Paxton Scheurer,
Bailey Martinez,
Maleya Burns, and
Ashlyn Lerma – saw the Rambelles win their home finale over No. 10 Lubbock Christian on Sunday afternoon at Mayer Field.
The Lady Chaps kicked off the scoring in the first inning with a three-run home run to take the early lead.
Burns led the second inning off with a walk before advancing to third on an
Ashton McMillan single as a part of a hit-and-run. Burns would score the Rambelles' first run on a wild pitch.
Tatiana Trotter would draw a walk to put runners on the corners; she and McMillan would execute a double steal that saw the latter score the second run of the inning.
Scheurer's sacrifice fly with the bases loaded tied the game, with the fourth run scored by
Ashton Dirner on a wild pitch to give the Rambelles the 4-3 lead.
After the Lady Chaps tied the score in the top of the third, the Rambelles responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.
Martinez singled to lead off the inning, and
Lindsey Evans drew a walk to put two runners on for
Tatiana Trotter, who delivered a two-out RBI double down the left field to plate Martinez and Evans.
A Dirner walk put Trotter on second, who used aggressive baserunning to score on a softly-hit infield single by Lerma to make it 7-4.
Lerma led off the sixth inning with a single, advancing to third on a throwing error by the Lady Chaps' third baseman before scoring on a groundout by Scheurer. The Chaps would push a run across in the final frame but could not muster enough for a comeback.
After taking two losses yesterday,
Genesis Armendariz picked up the win as she threw 5.1 innings in relief of
Cheyenne Floyd. The junior scattered six hits and three walks, striking out four and only allowing two runs to cross the plate.
The Rambelles improve to 29-21 overall and 21-18 in conference play; they close their regular season this weekend with a series against Cameron.
