SAN ANGELO – The top-seeded Angelo State baseball team clinched their third-straight trip to Cary, North Carolina, for the Division II College World Series with a 6-0 win over the second seed, Colorado Mesa, on Saturday afternoon in the South Central Super Regional at Foster Field at 1
st Community Credit Union Stadium.
The win means the Rams will make their sixth overall trip to the Division II College World Series since the program's inception in 2005; the win was also the 52
nd for the Rams, the most in a single season in program history.
Walks by Kam Kelton and
Thomas Cain sandwiched a
Tyler Boggs single in the fourth inning to load the bases. A ground ball hit by
Jacob Guerrero to the Mavericks' third baseman saw the fielder throw wide of second base for a potential inning-ending double play, scoring the game's first two runs on the errant throw.
A
Tripp Clark sacrifice fly later in the inning pushed the Rams' lead to 3-0.
The Rams would once again load the bases in the next inning via a trio of walks to set up Cain, who was hit by a Maverick pitch in the back to drive in a run.
A sacrifice fly by Boggs in the seventh inning tacked on another run, and a Kam Kelton RBI double in the final frame saw the score line expand to 6-0 in the Rams' favor.
On the day, the Rams drew nine walks and stole eight bases against the Mavericks' pitching and defense.
Clark and Kelton each recorded two hits for the Rams, and Kelton reached base all five times he stepped to the plate this afternoon.
Kade Bragg turned in another great performance on the mound, pitching seven shutout innings and allowing only seven hits and two walks while striking out six Mavericks.
Bragg's win is the 14
th this season, the most in Division II this season, while his ERA drops to 1.03 on the year.
Scott Ellis threw the final two innings in relief, only allowing one hit while striking out one. This is the sixth multi-inning shutout appearance for the relief pitcher this season.
The Rams improve to 52-9 on the season; the Division II College World Series will take place at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina, from June 3
