Kingsville, Texas – A back-and-forth, tight matchup between UAFS and the Angelo State volleyball team on Saturday at the LSC Crossover saw the match between the two teams go to five sets, and despite a sizeable hole for the Rambelles and all the momentum on the side of the Lady Lions, the Belles orchestrated a comeback in the final set to end their weekend in the win column.
After dropping the first set 25-20, the Belles claimed sets two and three 25-19. In set four, the Belles held match point at 24-20; however, the Lady Lions would score the next six points to keep the match alive.
The Lady Lions' momentum continued into the fifth set as they jumped ahead to a 7-3 lead. With all the momentum on UAFS' side, the Belles would dig deep and respond by going on a 12-2 run over the rest of the set to claim the set and the match.
A pair of kills by
Elsa Lamphere, as well as kills from freshmen
Hannah Spencer and
Madi Parrish, tied the final set at 7-all before a pair of service aces from
Kayla Baer would give the Belles a two-point lead, one they would only grow until the match's conclusion.
Evelyn Torres clinched the match for the Belles with the final kill of the contest, which was her 18
th of the match, a new career-high for the senior from Fort Worth. Torres also had 16 digs for her second double-double of the season.
Elsa Lamphere and
Hannah Kinnison each had 16 kills, while Parrish and Spencer chipped in eight and six kills, respectively.
Laney Dale led the Belles with 30 assists, her fourth match this season with 30 or more assists; she also recorded a double-double with 16 digs, her third double-double in a row, and her fourth in the past five matches.
In addition to having three aces, Baer assisted 23 times off the bench. Libero
Caleigh Enax recorded a season-high 27 digs; she has broken the 20-dig mark thrice in her last four matches.
Ireland Ferguson had 14 digs, the most this season for the sophomore from Florida.
The Belles are now 10-2 on the season, a six-win improvement from their 4-8 record through 12 games last season. The Belles open conference play on Wednesday inside Junell Center – Stephens Arena when they host Western New Mexico.
