SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State softball team opened their first midweek series of the season in emphatic fashion, winning 9-1 in five innings of play over UT Permian Basin on Tuesday afternoon at Mayer Field.
For the second game in a row, the Rambelles struck for five runs in the bottom of the first.
Carter Smith and
Averie Gunther drew walks to set up
Tatiana Trotter, who tripled to right field to plate the game's first two runs.
Keilei Garcia, the next batter, drove in Trotter with a single through the right side.
The final two runs of the opening frame would score on a Falcons' wild pitch and a
Layni Tanner sacrifice fly.
The third inning was a carbon copy of the first, with Smith and Gunther reaching before Trotter, who tripled for the second time in as many at bats to plate the pair and push the Rambelles' lead to 7-0.
Abby Brand's first collegiate hit, a single to center field, scored the eighth run of the game in the fourth inning; later in the inning,
Ashton McMillan drove a ball to deep center for a sacrifice fly for ASU's final run.
The Falcons scratched across a run in the top of the fifth but couldn't keep the game alive.
For the third time this season,
Cheyenne Floyd struck out ten opposing batters, doing so over four innings of work where she only allowed one hit and one walk. The junior pitcher picked up her ninth win of the season, which leads Division II.
The Rambelles are 13-1 on the season and 4-0 in LSC play; they close their series out against UT Permian Basin tomorrow with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
