SAN ANTONIO – The Angelo State softball team overcame a two-hour rain delay and a three-run deficit in their game this evening against St. Mary's for a 4-3 win over the Rattlers in the series' opening game at The Park at StMU.
A downpour during the national anthem pregame caused the game, originally scheduled to start at 4 p.m., to instead start at 6:15 p.m.
The Rattlers opened the scoring with a run in the first inning before adding runs in the second and fourth innings.
In the fifth inning, the Rambelles loaded the bases courtesy of an
Averie Gunther hit by pitch and a pair of full-count walks to
Erin Plunkett and
Ashton Dirner, and with two outs, scored their first run on a fielding error by the Rattlers' first baseman.
Carter Smith would single in the second run of the inning to cut the deficit to one run.
Tatiana Trotter tripled with one out in the sixth inning before scoring the tying run on a
Keilei Garcia single that just crept past the outstretched glove of the Rattlers' second baseman.
Dirner led off the seventh inning by reaching on a Rattler error; she advanced to third on a pair of productive groundouts before scoring on a
Laylonna Applin single to left field.
Gunther got the start in the circle, lasting 1.1 innings and allowing two runs.
Amelia Hatthorn pitched five innings in relief of Gunther, her longest outing for the Blue and Gold. Hatthorn allowed five hits and one run as she picked up her second win of the season.
Cheyenne Floyd recorded the final two outs in relief, shutting the door on the Rattlers for her first save of the season.
The Rambelles are now 28-9 on the season and 14-8 in LSC play; the two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow, which is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m.
