Floyd Throws Shutout; No. 24 Rambelles Win Series Against Rattlers

SAN ANTONIO – The Angelo State softball team won their four LSC series in a row by claiming a 2-0 win in game one of today's doubleheader against St. Mary's at The Park at STMU; however, the Rattlers came back to walk off the Rambelles 6-5 in game two to avoid the sweep.

Game one was scoreless through the first five frames before the Rambelles struck for two runs in the top of the sixth.

Carter Smith drew a one-out walk and Laylonna Applin singled to set up Tatiana Trotter, who doubled to left field to score Smith. The next batter, Keilei Garcia, grounded out to score Applin and double the Rambelles' lead.

For the second start in a row, Cheyenne Floyd threw a complete-game shutout without recording a strikeout. She allowed five hits and walked four batters and her start was highlighted by getting out of a bases-loaded, no-outs jam in the second inning that kept the Rattlers scoreless.

The win is the 14th of the season for Floyd.

The Rambelles mustered a two-out rally in the opening inning of game two, doing so by loading the bases on an Applin single, a Trotter hit by pitch, and a Garcia walk for Averie Gunther, who singled to left center to plate a pair of runs.

The Rattler halved the lead in the bottom half of the inning before scoring three runs in the third inning to take a 4-2 lead.

The Rambelles would retake the lead on three runs in the sixth inning without recording a hit. With one out in the inning, Trotter reached on a dropped third strike. A fielding error by the Rattlers' shortstop saw Garcia reach base and advance to third base while Trotter scored.

Pinch runner Laynee Crooks tied the game on a fielder's choice by Gunther, who would subsequently come around to score on back-to-back-to-back walks drawn by Erin Plunkett, Abby Brand, and Ashton Dirner.

The Rattlers would score two runs in the bottom of the seventh to claim the 6-5 win.

Matie Wolkow got the start inside the circle, lasting for 2.1 innings before being relieved by Torrey Hogan, who threw the final four innings in relief before being charged with the loss.

The Rambelles are 24-10 on the season and 15-9 in LSC play. They are back at home this weekend to host Western New Mexico in a three-game series.
