Late Rally Lifts No. 20 Rambelles to Series-Opening Win

AUSTIN – The Angelo State softball team extended their winning streak to four with a 6-0 win over St. Edward's on Thursday afternoon at Diane Daniels Field. The Rambelles scored five runs in the final frame to pull away late to secure the victory over the Hilltoppers.

The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth inning, when Ashton Dirner drew a two-out walk to keep the inning alive before she stole second and third base during the next at bat. She would score the game's first run on Averie Gunther's double to the left centerfield gap.

The game remained 1-0 until the seventh inning, when the Rambelles pushed across five more runs.

Zoey De Baca walked, and Layni Tanner bunt singled to lead off the seventh, with pinch runner Erin Plunkett and Tanner advancing on a Dirner sacrifice bunt.

Gunther would drive in her second run of the game on a sacrifice fly to double the lead.

Carter Smith legged out an infield single to put runners on the corners. Tanner, on third base, would steal home to extend the lead to three runs. The Rambelles stole six bases, tied for a single-game high this season, and four of those steals came in the final inning.

A Hilltopper error kept the inning alive, and Tatiana Trotter hit an infield single to score another run.

Keilei Garcia would finish the scoring off with a double to left center. The senior catcher was the only Rambelle to record a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 at the plate.

Cheyenne Floyd picked up her 17th win of the season, striking out three and only allowing one hit in six innings of work. This is her second-straight start where she did not issue a free pass.

In her past 26 innings of work, Floyd has only allowed 11 hits while striking out 18, with only one run scoring in that period.

Ameila Hatthorn and Matie Wolkow combined to throw a perfect final inning in relief, with each pitcher recording a strikeout.

The Rambelles are now 28-10 on the season and 19-9 in LSC play; they close out their series with a doubleheader, starting tomorrow at noon.
