Clark Home Run Powers No.23 Rams Past Hilltoppers

AUSTIN, Texas – A two-run home run off the bat of Tripp Clark allowed the No. 23-ranked Angelo State baseball team to complete the comeback and secure a 6-4 victory over St. Edward's on a wet Saturday afternoon.

The Hilltoppers took the lead early as they took advantage of two walks, two singles and a fielding error to put up three runs in the opening frame.

The Rams responded in the ensuing half inning as Ryder McDaniel reached base with a one-out single. After a sacrifice bunt and another single, he scored on a double steal attempt.

Through the following two and a half innings, the game remained scoreless as Alezeah Gutierrez and St. Edward's starter allowed three runners on base combined. Gutierrez's afternoon ended after allowing three runs, two earned, off four hits and three walks while striking out four in five and a third innings of work.

In the seventh, StEU added a run to their lead as a lead off walk and an fielding error put a runner on third and in position for a sacrifice fly to make it a 4-2 ballgame.

With two outs in the top of the eighth, Tayten Tredaway drew a two out walk. After he stole second, Weston Valasek singled to center field to put Tredaway on third and be in position for the two runners to complete a double steal and cut the deficit to one run.

In the top of the ninth inning, Blake Wilhoite drew a lead-off walk. After a quick two outs after, the Rams catcher stole second base. In the ensuing at-bat Jacob Guerrero struck out; however, a throwing error allowed him to reach first and Wilhoite to score and tie the game. After Guerrero stole second, Tripp Clark homered to left field to give the Rams their first lead of the game.

Caleb Huertz came on in the bottom of the ninth and collected his fifth save of the season after an infield popup ended the game and gave ASU the victory.

With the win, the Rams put themselves in position to take the series with the finale on Sunday, April, 21 with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
