No. 24 Rams Come Up Short in Final Regular Season Game Against WT

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The 24th-ranked Angelo State baseball team fell just short of the ninth-inning comeback, falling to No. 5 West Texas A&M 6-5 in the final regular season game on Sunday at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.
 
With the loss, the Rams finish the regular season with a 34-16 overall record, going 32-16 in Lone Star Conference play to finish third in the standings.
 
After a couple of scoreless innings, the Rams put the first run on the board in the bottom of the third inning as Jacob Guerrero doubled to right field, scoring Ryder McDaniel.
 
The Buffs answered back in the fourth, hitting a solo home run to tie the game before hitting another one in the fifth to take a 2-1 lead.
 
Mason Bryant started on the mound for the Rams, throwing four innings of work with two runs on six hits while collecting two strikeouts.
 
WT extended the lead in the sixth, putting up two runs on a double and a while pitch before hitting another solo home run in the seventh to make it 5-1.
 
Throwing in relief was Caleb Heuertz, tossing three 2/3 innings with three runs on four hits while striking out five batters.
 
In the eighth inning, the Rams added a run on a single by Conagher Sands and loaded the bases, but the Buffs got out of the jam with a strikeout to keep a three-run lead.
 
WT added an insurance run in the top of the ninth, hitting a solo home run to make it 6-2.
 
Johnny Stacy closed out the game for the Rams, throwing one 1/3 innings with a run on one hit and two strikeouts.
 
In the bottom of the ninth, the Rams led the inning off with a walk by Kannon Brooks. Guerrero singled to right-center to bring in a run before a two-RBI double by Sands made it a one-run game. The Buffs secured the win, earning a fly-out to end the game.
 
The Rams will host in the opening round of the conference tournament, facing No. 6-seeded Texas A&M International in a three-game series beginning on Friday, May 3.
