CARY, N.C. – A five-for-five day at the plate from
Blake Wilhoite highlighted the eighth-seeded Angelo State baseball team's victory over fourth-seeded Point Loma in the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship on Monday night.
With the win, the Rams continue in the winner's bracket and will take on the winner of the Point Loma and IUP on Thursday, June 6.
The action picked up early through the game's first few innings. Point Loma struck first as they loaded the bases and scratched a run across with a ground out. ASU tied the game with
Tayten Tredaway hitting a lead-off triple to right center before
Tripp Clark grounded out to score him.
The Sea Lions retook the lead in the ensuing half-inning as a lead off double quickly became two runs as a home run scrapped over the left-center wall.
The Rams responded with a run of their own as
Weston Valasek led off by getting hit by a pitch before coming around to score on a single through the left side by Wilhoite.
PLNU loaded the bases with one out in the third inning before
Colby Casey came in in relief, working a strikeout and a groundout to keep the Sea Lions scoreless in the inning.
Both teams traded two runs in the fourth inning with the Sea Lions piecing together two doubles and a single. The Rams took advantage of a walk, hit-by-pitch and a wild pitch to put runners in scoring position before
Christian Garnette doubled down the right field line to make it 5-4.
Mason Bryant entered on the mound for the Rams in the fourth inning, tossing two 1/3 innings with on run on two hits as he picked up his first win of the season.
The Rams took the lead in the sixth inning as
Ryder McDaniel singled through the left side to score Garnette before Clark hit a two-RBI double to left for the go-ahead runs.
After Point Loma scored a run in the top of the seventh, ASU added three more runs highlighted by an RBI single by
Kamden Kelton and a bases-loaded sacrifice fly from Tredaway that scored a second run on a throwing error.
In the eighth inning,
Conagher Sands hit a solo home run to left center while Kelton drove in Valasek on a single before Wilhoite tallied his fifth hit of the night on an RBI single to center.
Johnny Stacy closed out the final three innings on the mound for ASU without allowing a hit. In the ninth, he struck out three batters as he picked up his fourth save of the season and his second in the tournament.
The Rams had at least one hit from everyone in the lineup while Clark led with three RBIs and three others tallied two RBIs. Monday's win was the most runs the Rams have scored in the college world series.
The Rams will face off against either the Sea Lions or the Hawks in their third game of the tournament on Thursday with the first pitch set for 12:30 p.m. CST.
