Rambelles Open 2025 with a 66-49 Victory Over the Mustangs

SILVER CITY, NM - The Angelo State women's basketball team opened the 2025 calendar year with a 66-49 victory over Western New Mexico inside of Drag's Court on Friday evening.
 
With the win the Rambelles improve to 9-3 overall and 5-1 in Lone Star Conference action, while the Mustangs fall to 0-10 overall and 0-5 in LSC play.
 
40 MINUTE RUNDOWN
  • Madeline Stephens would record the first basket of 2025, after hitting a three from the top of the key.
  • Majik Esquivel knocked down her first of five threes at the 8:01 marker in the first quarter giving the Rambelles a 8-0 lead.
  • Esquivel went on to knock down four threes in the first quarter to give the Rambelles a 28-9 lead going into the second quarter of play.
  • A layup from Chidera Ezelio at the 7:40 marker of the second quarter gave the Rambelles their first 20-point lead of the contest.
  • Madi Lumsden scored the last four points of the half giving the Rambelles a ,37-22, lead heading into halftime.
  • Jaelyn Morrison with 7:33 on the clock in the third quarter brought the Mustangs lead to single digits, 37-29, for the first time since the beginning of the first quarter.
  • Natalie Magallnes knocked down a jumper at the buzzer to bring the Mustangs deficit to one, 46-45 heading into the final quarter of action.
  • The Belles would knock down back-to-back threes from Lumsden, and Stephens to bring their lead back to double-digits, 57-45 with eight minutes remaining in the contest.
  • The Rambelles went on a 20-4 run in the fourth quarter to secure the 66-49 victory.
 
GAME STATS
  • With the victory the Rambelles extend their winning streak to seven straight games.
  • Esquivel ties her career high with 20 points leading all scorers.
  • Esquivel would set a career high with five threes made in the contest.
  • Stephens recorded her fifth double-double recording 14 points and 12 rebounds.
  •  Lumsden would be the final double-digit scorer for the Rambelles recording 15 points, her fifth consecutive double-digit scoring game.
  • The Blue and Gold shot 31 percent (21-67) from the field, 33 percent (9-27) from behind the arc, and 71 percent (15-21) from the charity stripe.
  • The Belles out rebounded the Mustangs, 54-35.
  • The Mustangs committed 16 turnovers, compared to the Belles 18.
  • The Rambelles never trailed in the contest.
  • The Belles held an opponent under 50 points for the second time this season.

The Rambelles return to action on Sunday when they take on Sul Ross State for the first time in program history. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT.
