No. 21 Rams Tame Mustangs on Homecoming Night

SAN ANGELO, Texas – No. 21 Angelo State bounced back in dominant fashion Saturday night, rolling to a 48-28 Homecoming victory over Midwestern State at 1st Community Credit Union Field at LeGrand Stadium.

With the win, the Rams snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in Lone Star Conference play.

The Mustangs struck first, marching 73 yards on the opening drive for a touchdown. But ASU answered quickly with back-to-back scoring drives: a 27-yard touchdown pass from Braeden Fuller to Zeek Freeman, followed by a 24-yard strike from Kaeden Smith to Donny Bishop to take a 14-7 lead.

Fuller and Smith shared quarterback duties throughout the game. Fuller threw for 80 yards and three touchdowns, while Smith passed for 85 yards and a score, adding 83 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

After a Midwestern State field goal, Smith broke loose for a 64-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 21-10 at the end of the first quarter.

Fuller found Hunter Wallis in the back of the end zone for a 5-yard touchdown pass just before halftime, giving ASU a 28-10 advantage at the break.

Angelo State kept the momentum going in the second half. Cameron Dischler ripped off a 63-yard run to set up another Fuller-to-Wallis connection from five yards out. Dischler led all rushers with 154 yards on just 10 carries.

On the following possession, the Rams' defense forced a three-and-out. Caine Elroy blocked the ensuing punt, and Eugene Liger recovered it in the end zone to stretch the lead to 42-10.

Midwestern State put together a brief rally, scoring twice to trim the deficit to 42-25. But ASU responded once again—this time on special teams—when Alan Dobbins recovered an onside kick and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown.

The Mustangs threatened once more in the closing minutes, but Akili Hubbard intercepted a pass in the red zone to seal the victory for the Rams.

The Angelo State football program returns to action Saturday, Oct. 25, when the Rams travel to Alpine, Texas to face Sul Ross State.
