SAN ANGELO, Texas – The fifth-ranked Angelo State football team suffered its first loss of the 2025 season Saturday night, falling 28-14 to No. 9 UT Permian Basin at 1st Community Credit Union Field at LeGrand Stadium.
With the loss, the Rams drop to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in Lone Star Conference play. The setback also snapped several notable winning streaks, including a 14-game conference win streak dating back to 2023 and a 13-game regular-season streak.
The game started as a defensive battle, with both teams held scoreless until the Falcons found the end zone late in the first quarter. Following a turnover on downs by ASU, UTPB quickly capitalized, extending the lead to 14-0 early in the second quarter.
The Rams answered on the next drive as a 27-yard end-around by
Zeek Freeman set up a 2-yard touchdown pass from
Braeden Fuller to
Corey Sandolph.
UTPB responded before halftime with another score to push the lead back to 14 points.
Angelo State's defense came out strong in the second half.
Xavier Walton hauled in his fourth interception of the season, extending the Rams' streak of consecutive games with an interception to 20.
Later in the third quarter, Fuller connected with
Anthony Jones on a 32-yard touchdown strike to cut the deficit to 21-14. Fuller, making his first start since Sept. 6, threw for 183 yards and two touchdowns.
The Rams had a chance to tie the game in the fourth quarter after
Demetrias Charles recorded the team's second interception of the night. However, the offense went three-and-out, and UTPB answered with a game-sealing touchdown to close out the scoring.
Angelo State hits the road next Saturday, Oct. 11, to face Texas A&M-Kingsville. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
