Tyler, Texas – The Angelo State softball team bounced back from their game one defeat against top-ranked UT Tyler on Monday afternoon at Irwin Field to end their weekend on a high note, defeating the defending national champions 3-2, snapping the Patriots' 26-game winning streak in the process.
The lone bright spot in the day's first game was a two-run home run by shortstop
Laylonna Applin in the third inning, which is her seventh of the season, matching her home run total from her freshman season.
The Patriots scored two runs in the first, second, and fourth innings before striking for seven in the bottom of the fifth to claim a 13-2 run-rule win.
Game two was a scoreless pitcher's duel until the fourth inning, where
Erin Plunkett would single and Applin would draw a walk before both moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt.
Plunkett would score the game's first run on a fielder's choice before Applin doubled the lead on a steal of home plate.
The Patriots would pull a run back in the bottom half of the inning to make it 2-1.
The Rambelles would score the following inning, with Plunkett and Applin singles to lead off the inning to put runners on the corners. Plunkett would score on a wild pitch to make it 3-1.
The Patriots would strike again in the bottom of the sixth to make it 3-2 but couldn't tie the game against the Rambelles.
Cheyenne Floyd improved to 8-2 on the season, going the distance and allowing four hits, two runs, and five walks while recording three strikeouts. Floyd's effort in the circle helped the Rambelles claim their first-ever win in Tyler.
This is the Rambelles' fourth win over a ranked opponent this season and their first win over the top-ranked team in the country since a 3-2, eight-inning victory over UT Tyler back on March 25
th, 2022.
The Rambelles are 15-3 overall and 6-2 in LSC play. They are back home this weekend to host Texas A&M-Kingsville and Texas A&M International.
