SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State softball team returned home and claimed a pair of wins over Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday afternoon at Mayer Softball Field, winning game one 2-0 before completing the sweep with a 5-1 victory in game two.
Game one remained scoreless until the third inning when
Erin Plunkett drew a two-out walk to extend the inning for
Laylonna Applin, who tripled to right center field to score Plunkett.
The Rambelles tacked on an insurance run in the sixth inning, with
Tatiana Trotter leading off the frame with a bunt single before scoring on an
Ashton McMillan single to right center later.
Cheyenne Floyd improved to 9-2 on the season, only allowing one hit, two walks and striking out eight Javelinas. She carried a no-hitter until the final out of the game, when a Javelina snuck a ball past the outstretched glove of Applin at short to break up her potential third no-hitter of the season.
The Rambelles kicked off scoring in game two in the second inning, with a walk by
Averie Gunther and a single by
Lauren De La Cruz setting up
Carter Smith, whose dribbler up the middle scored Gunther. De La Cruz would score later in the inning on a wild pitch to double the lead.
A Javelina error to lead off the sixth inning put a runner on base for
Erin Plunkett, who doubled to left field to score pinch runner
Blake Holtorf. Applin would single Plunkett in to make it 4-0, and Applin would cap the scoring in the inning by crossing home plate on an infield single.
The Javelinas would score their only run of the day in the final inning to make it 5-1.
Amelia Hatthorn picked up her sixth win of the season, throwing six shutout innings and allowing five hits and no walks while striking out three. Gunther threw the final inning in relief, her first action in the circle this season.
The Rambelles improve to 17-3 on the season and 8-2 in LSC play. They close out their weekend when they host Texas A&M International on Sunday at 1 p.m.
